The Transportation Safety Board is investigating the mid-air crashof two small planes near St. Brieux, Sask., which claimed the livesof five people on the weekend. RCMP said it appears the two private aircraft a Lake Buccaneeramphibious and a Piper PA-28 Cherokee collided Saturday morningnear St. Brieux, about 175 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon. An adult male and female were aboard the Buccaneer that was enroute from Regina to La Ronge, police said. Two adult males and ayoung male were aboard the Piper that was travelling from Calgaryto St. Brieux. CBC News has confirmed with family members of Eric Donovan, 38,that he was a passenger with his 11-year-old son, Wade, in thePiper. Eric Donovan ran a grain trucking company in the Vulcan area butlived in Mossleigh, Alta. a small town roughly an hour southeastof Calgary. They were flying with pilot Denny Loree, who is in his 50s, fromNanton, Alta., who farmed in the Mossleigh area. Eric Donovan's cousin, Ian Donovan, was recently elected as theWildrose Party MLA in Little Bow in the Alberta provincialelection. He said the group was on a day trip to St. Brieux to pickup parts for an air seeder, which is used to plant seed crop inlarge fields. Officers from the RCMP's Wakaw detachment said they were called at8:50 a.m. CST Saturday to investigate a report of a single planecrash but later discovered the wreckage of two aircraft. "A plane was found submerged in a slough by first responders duringa ground search," RCMP said. "Further investigation revealed thatthis aircraft collided mid-air with another aircraft. A secondaircraft was located in the vicinity." 'A real shock to the community' Jackie Mark and her mother were having a morning coffee and lookingout their window when they saw a plane fall from the sky. They didnot see a collision, just a single plane falling and then the soundof a roar. They drove toward the spot where they thought the plane went downbut could see no smoke. About a kilometre from their home theyfound a piece of wreckage and called 911. "It was a real shock to the community, and all provincewide, because this is something two airplanes colliding is basicallyunheard of," said Paul Leray, who was mayor of the town of St.Brieux for 15 years. Tom Ray, who has 37 years of experience in the skies and managesthe Regina Flying Club, described a midair crash as an extremelyrare occurrence in aviation. Ray confirmed the pilot of the Buccaneer was a member of the Reginaclub. He said the planes were in uncontrolled airspace. There is an openradio frequency for communication between aircraft and pilotsregularly broadcast their position so other traffic can know theirlocation, travel direction and altitude, he said. Northbound aircraft would normally fly at even altitudes plus 500feet and eastbound aircraft at odd altitudes plus 500 feet, Raysaid, but those rules don't apply to aircraft flying below 3,000feet. Access to the area where debris was strewn over several kilometreswas to be opened to the media on Sunday. The Transportation Safety Board has assigned two investigators tothe incident. RCMP said they have contacted family members, but said they did notyet have permission to release any names of the deceased. View Larger Map.
