“Anyone Can Cook” – A quote from the adorable animation movie Ratatouille holds great promise in the world of business. Inspiration from movies, why? Well, movies are often considered to be a metaphor for real life and recent years have seen a host of high-quality animation movies that resonate strongly in the real world. There is a huge myth that has been circulated over time that starting up a business is only for those with proper financial backing. However, the truth is that when it comes to business ideas, the fundamentals are not that different from cooking. Anyone can start a business, and one need not always graduate with top honours or have a business school qualification to succeed. This is because entrepreneurship ideas are one of the most unique things in life. They can spring up from anywhere and at any time. There are no age limits, nor are there any particular pre-qualifications involved. One of the newest efforts in the commercial space is to find a middle ground where analogue and digital combine together to create a highly successful, hybrid solution to an existing, everyday problem. For example, Brazilian Fashion Retailer – C&A deployed the power of social suggestion by displaying Facebook Likes on garment hangers. Another idea involves light bulbs being made out of used Plastic bottles. There are scores of people living in abject poverty in all the developing nations of the world. Here, even the most basic of amenities are a luxury, with electrical power supplies ranging from being erratic to non-existent for hours on end. As a result, such people have to struggle to live in darkness or resort to hazardous alternatives like kerosene fuelled lanterns. Using a mixture of water and local bleach, people in an African neighbourhood have created a usable light source that offers a safer alternative in the dark. The product packaging industry is one of the most misunderstood of them all. At one end, there’s the pressure of keeping goods intact as they travel from the shop floor to the customer’s home. On the other, the packaging also tends to add to landfill and other environmental concerns. To get around this, the industry has successfully pushed for the adoption recyclable packaging. However, some individuals are going a step further by designing and producing packaging in a way that it can later be turned into useful furniture or other, everyday objects. So it is clear that all one needs to be an entrepreneur is a concept that has been well thought out, a supply-chain to ensure that it does not falter at the drawing board stage and the financial backing to help sustain things into reality.
