How to Prepare for Disaster

Family & Parenting
Catastrophe can take place anytime, anywhere. No one can really tell when these calamities will strike so the best weapon we have is being prepared. This means mental and physical preparedness. So how do we get ready for disasters? In this article, we will be sharing some suggestions to get yourself and your family ready during disasters.

The first step is to evaluate your home. Is the structure safe? You need to make sure that your home has a well-built foundation so that it can survive major disasters. You can do this by bolting the foundation. Also, check the roof, walls and the chimney for cracks and the overall condition. If you stay in an apartment, find your building's utility controls and study how to use them.

Next is to make a family emergency plan. It is best to include your family members in your prepping so they know what to do when disaster strikes. The first thing on your prepping list is to find a safe place in your house that will serve as your bug out location. Look for places that are strong. Then, try to do home evacuation drills. Look for a nearby place that will serve as an emergency location. This is where you will evacuate whenever disaster happens.

It is also suggested that you practice first-aid courses, like CPR. It will come handy whenever a family member gets into trouble. Also, try to involve your neighbors on your prepping plans. They can always assist you and they might have better plans than you do.

There are also household items that are very important during disasters and calamities, for example, flashlights. Flashlights should be found in hallways, bedrooms and bathrooms. Also keep spare batteries. Make sure you keep them in a places where they can easily be found.

Make sure that your appliances are secured. Keep large items on lower shelves. This is to prevent heavy objects from falling whenever earthquakes and typhoons happen.

It is also important that you prepare the supplies you need for survival. The first ones you need to secure is water and food. Store an adequate supply of drinking water. It is also recommended that you have a water-filtering device, just in case your supply of water in not enough. Store foods that are non-perishable, like canned goods. Try to keep a can opener handy. If you own any pets, also make sure to keep a good supply of pet food.

It is also important to store first-aid kits and hygiene kits.Your kit should include bandages in various sizes, surgical gloves and disinfectants. Also keep an enough supply of prescription drugs. Toilet supplies should be kept too, including toilet papers, soaps, alcohols and towels.

For proper upkeeping, place the items in plastic boxes that are waterproof and pest-proof. Put these items in secured places where you and and your family can easily access them in times of emergency. Avoid keeping your supplies in basements. Also, try to replenish your supplies and kits annually. Remember to restock food supplies that are near their expiration date.

Being geared up during times of calamity is our only weapon. This will ensure our family's survival and it will keep us mentally alert during emergencies.
