Yard signs matter because they are often responsible for giving someone the first impression of your business and will either succeed or fail in communicating a specific message. Graphic design principles are critical for creating good yard signs. To start the process of creating a good design for a sign, you must know a few things: • What is the goal you are trying to achieve? • Who is your audience? • What is the key message you want to convey? Once these are clear in your mind, it is then possible to create a layout design that will facilitate achievement of the goal, appeal to the audience, and contain the clear, concise message you want. Keys of Good Design There is only so much a single sign can do or be. There is great value in simplifying your design so that it is focused around a single goal and message. Without a reduction in complexity around your goal and message, your design will risk becoming crowded and directionless. Poorly designed signage will fail to communicate a message that will benefit your business. When you look at your design, ask yourself, “Where does my eye go when I first look at this?” The pictures and text in your design should invite the reader in and engage them. If your eye slides out of the side of the image or to a corner, this is a red flag that the design needs work to attract the viewer. Also,it should be instantaneously clear to a viewer how the text should be read. Design work really cannot begin until the text is fully defined for the design piece because layout designers will arrange and rearrange text in myriad ways to give the viewer the right message. Font selection is only a part of the work involved in presenting a written message on a sign. Great design will often customize how the letters are spaced apart, how the words are spaced, how the lines are spaced, and how the text is indented and justified. Often the design will need to incorporate a business logo and follow a style guide for the company. After taking all this into consideration, the layout and design choices made by the designer should create an overall unified piece that has consistency and gives the viewer the impression of wholeness or completeness. The opposite would be a design where graphical and textual elements of the image clashed with each other. Bad designs will have elements that look like they were included randomly and thoughtlessly. A design that is lacking all critical information necessary for fully understanding the intended message still fails as well.Good design principles make it possible to create amazing yard signs that successfully convey information and also draw interest to your business. With proper application of the key principles of graphic design, you will ensure your sign designs are beautiful and successful.
