If you are a jewelry connoisseur then you’ll be familiar with the history of all the various pieces that go into the trinket box. But people cannot be equally knowledgeable in all parts of the world. There are bound to be those that would love to know the history behind their precious possessions. This then is an effort to spread the word on how eternity rings came to be popularized. Eternity rings as they are also called are often used as wedding rings. They can be broadly categorized into two main type’s viz. Full rings and half rings. The former has precious and semi-precious stones set all along the body of the ring. The latter on the other hand, has the stones only set along the visible part of the ring. Some even opt for a unique take on the classical design by opting for a pronounced head at the top-center. One could be excused for thinking that these rings are a modern development. Records show that such rings have been found as far back as 1900 BC. Believed to symbolize a love that is supposed to last forever, the rings often feature designs with multiple plaits or strands. In some cultures, the plaits/strands have even been replaced by designs incorporating snakes or snake like dragons that seem to swallow their own tail. A ring as important as a wedding ring would be incomplete without the right gemstones being used. While diamonds have been traditionally preferred and coveted as well, other precious stones such as rubies and emeralds too have been used. Also, ‘full’ rings cannot be adjusted post creation, for size. They are usually custom-crafted as per order; thereby making price quotes a tricky affair. Jewelers too are hesitant for the same reason to keep samples in stock. This development has led to many online jewelers taking advantage and leveraging their vast catalogue of designs in the digital domain together with lower prices to take business away from their brick and mortar competitors. A trick to reduce the price of the rings is by concentrating all the expensive gemstones along the visible part of the ring, while leaving the less expensive ones for the part where it won’t be readily spotted in daily life. Also, since the body of the ring tends to be deep even at the base of the finger, smaller size stones can be used. When it comes to stones used in these rings, cuts that can be set along the edge along the body are preferred. Thus, one is more likely to find square shaped or those of a more oblong shape being used. Princess cut stones too are climbing rapidly up the popularity charts when it comes to the cuts being used. At the end of the day however, everything from the choice of the metal, the stones being used, their individual characteristics and even the point of purchase, all are a matter of personal preference. So happy shopping and choose wisely!
