Variety of Decorative Fabrics and Their Uses

Crafts
The textile industry has also progressed leaps and bounds in comparison with the other niches. The fabrics and materials we wear every day and decorate our homes with are possible as a result of improved textile machinery and techniques for the production.

Out of the plenty of fabrics available today, lace is a flamboyant and subtle fabric that has in fashion from a very long time and even centuries. It is even now used for a number of several purposes including decorations on curtains, pillows and wedding dresses as well.

If you are one of those creative persons who wish to embellish clothings and other material, the knowledge of application of the lace is quite important. Therefore prior to purchasing the fabric, it is important to determine exactly for what purpose you would require them.

Types, Uses and Availability

The laces can be availed in a variety of sizes and colors. They can be acquired in bolts from 45 to 110 inches of width for larger projects. Trims, on the other hand, can be availed with a varying width of about a half inch to 6 inches wide. Different widths are ideal for decorating various pieces. Here are few of the many types of laces that are used for various purposes.

  • Chantilly Lace - This type of lace originated in mid 1800s. It was a fine silk scrolled or floral design and was customary black and was used majorly for funeral clothing.
  • Alencon Lace - Alencon lace has its origin from France and is used widely to embellish bridal dresses. Its excellent floral needlework the netted base makes them perfect for the decoration attires for weddings and such occasions.
  • Guipure Lace - This one is stiffer than that of other types of laces. Guipure lace has lovely embroidered patterns that are held together by adjoining threads.
  • Eyelet Lace - This one is quite simple in style. The name eyelets come from the patterns of small holes that appear just like eyelets. This lace therefore is on a solid piece of textile rather than on a net base and that is why it is used as a trim not an overlay.
  • Venice Lace - This kind of lace is heavy and its work is mostly found on lingerie. The floral designs are not embroidered on a net surface but are attached together by thread bars.
  • Schiffli Lace - Schiffli Lace is also embroidered on a net however is disintegrated later on either by burning away or other process to leave just the embroidered pattern. This lace is also produced by machines.
In the past when the laces originated around 13th to the 16th century, they were originally believed to be for the wealthy people since they could only afford it. However in the modern times, the techniques have made them readily available for all kinds of users. People can now purchase various fabrics from lace wholesale anywhere they are.
