If you want to extend the lifespan of your high speed computer, you need to keep it clean, and your two biggest enemies are moisture and heat. Both of these can cause immediate or progressive damage to the interior of your computer and all its components. Your circuit board can degenerate under excess heat, heat which is caused most commonly by dirt and dust. This can be avoided quite easily; all you have to do is practice regular maintenance and cleaning. Here are our five tips to help you avoid your PC crashing, data loss and costly repairs in the future because of overheating: 1. Look at Where You Keep Your Computer Before you start cleaning, check to see if there is anything close to the computer that could elevate its temperature, like direct sunlight through a window, or being in close proximity to a heating duct. Before you start cleaning, make sure your computer is unplugged. Never put any liquid or cleaning solution directly on any of the components; always put it on the cloth first. Climate control like air conditioning or a fan blowing directly onto the equipment can also prevent overheating. 2. Do an Annual Clean If you keep your computer in a climate-controlled space that is relatively clean, a general clean is only necessary once a year. But if your PC finds its home in a dirty or dusty shop or office, you will need to maintain it every few months. Use lint free wipes, some compressed air and a mild cleaning solution to lift sticky or static dust from the internal parts. 3. Cleaning the Case Compressed air is usually the easiest way to clean your computer case and ventilation ports. Just make sure you don’t blow the dust into the computer’s floppy or optical drives. Make sure the cables are attached to their connectors. 4. Mouse Maintenance A dirty mouse will give you an erratic pointer, and because it comes into contact with a surface, it is picking up dust constantly. To clean it, remove the ring on the underside and take the ball out before wiping any dirt off the plastic rollers. If it is an optical mouse, always check that the optical output is free of lint or other type of dust particles. 5. Keep Your Keyboard Clean If your keyboard is exposed all the time, it is also more likely to collect dust, dirt and debris between the keys. Invert the keyboard and shake it upside down to loosen anything that has fallen between the keys. If this does not work properly, you can also use compressed air.
