For almost a century, the FBI has been the federal government’s front line force protecting the public against crime and maintaining national security against spies, saboteurs, and terrorists. It’s a two-way street, too, because the FBI looks to the American public as its partner in the ceaseless struggle to keep our nation safe from crime, espionage, and terrorism. Many major cases broken by the FBI began when an ordinary citizen contacted the Bureau with a tip about a suspected violation of federal law. Since the events of September 11 (a.k.a. 9/11), the FBI has been gratified to receive a record number of applications by citizens eager to work at the Bureau and help fight terrorism. The Bureau received more than 15,000 applications between September 2001 and March 2002, the most applications ever submitted within a six-month period.
