The Airport Authority of India (AAI) is trying out theLower Area Control Centre Kochi — a new facility to manairspace below 24,500 feet — as part of restructuring, monitoring and control of Indian airspace. The AAI is updating its air traffic control facilities at 36airports. Kochi, being the busiest airport in South India afterChennai and Bangalore, has emerged as a new area control centre inthe new exercise. The plan aims to provide more efficient controlsystems to reduce flying time for aircraft landing and taking offfrom Nedumbassery international airport as well as those using thenaval air space. Air traffic controllers are engaged inproviding smooth, safe and orderly flow of air traffic andcontribute to the profitability of the aviation industry. The introduction of a new air traffic control unit at Nedumbasserywill enable controllers to handle traffic in this area moreefficiently as the major flow of aircraft is towards Kochi and thento Kozhikode and Coimbatore. Flights to and from all three airportswill be handled by the Kochi centre. Systems at the new centre — comprising state-of-the-artAIRCON2100 air traffic control automation system, is already inplace in Kochi and will cater to airspace up to about a 120 kmnorth of Kozhikode, north of Mysore, about 80 km south of Kochi andabout 175 km west into the Arabian Sea. These airspaces were being controlled by centres inThiruvananthapuram and Mangalore. The new system in Kochi is integrated with radar surveillanceinputs from Thiruvananthapuram, Mangalore and Bangalore, whichhelps provide a seamless, real-time picture of aircraft over alarge area. This ensures smooth flow of flights, reduces airborne time andresults in substantial fuel savings and reduced emissions. The AAI is also planning to install a local radar, work on which isprogressing on the south side of the airport. The new radar sensor will be integrated with AIRCON2100 system, which will facilitate tracking of an aircraft from takeoff tolanding. This new radar will help reduce flying distance andlanding interval between flights at Kochi. Meanwhile, airspace inthe area above 24,500 and upto 46,000 feet will be monitored by theChennai flight information centre.
