Singapore Press Holdings Limited (SPH) and SPH Foundation todaycontributed $400,000 to 20 charities under the Community Chest. Dr Lee Boon Yang, Chairman of SPH and SPH Foundation, presented thecheque to Ms Jennie Chua, Chairman of Community Chest and RADM KwekSiew Jin, President of National Council of Social Service, at aceremony held at the Singapore Conference Hall this evening. SPH donated to 10 charities that are serving the elderly, while SPHFoundation contributed to 10 charities serving needy children andyouth. Each charity will receive $20,000 in cash. Dr Lee said: "As a media organisation, we owe our success toSingaporeans' support and confidence. Hence, we believe it is ourresponsibility to give back to the community. We hope that ourdonations will help improve the lives of the less fortunate aroundus, and inspire others to do the same." Ms Jennie Chua said: "For nearly a decade, SPH and SPH Foundationhave been active donors to the Community Chest, contributing over$3 million towards our efforts in helping the less fortunate. Wevalue the sustained donations of long-time partners like SPH andSPH Foundation as Community Chest steps up our fund raising effortsthis year to support more people in need. Their generous donationof $400,000 this year will be designated to 20 programmes whichprovide education and therapy to children with special needs,counselling for at-risk youth and specialised care for the frailand lonely elderly. We thank SPH and SPH Foundation for theirsteadfast support and commitment." One of the beneficiaries this year is 18-year-old Nur NadzirahBinte Mohamed Ismail. Her father passed away from HuntingtonDisease when she was 10 years old. Her mother brought her and hersiblings up as a single parent. Her eldest brother is now sufferingfrom the same disease. After joining Persatuan Persuratan PemudaPemudi Melayu - ESU (4PM) in 2011, the voluntary welfareorganisation counselled and motivated her to gain back her selfesteem. She is now a class leader in her school. Another beneficiary is 80-year-old Lim Ah Hin. Mr Lim has beenreceiving help from the Singapore Leprosy Relief Association(SILRA) since losing his wife and his job as a cleaner in 2000.With his only son now in the Drug Rehabilitative Centre and norelatives around to help him, SILRA provided him with food,accommodation, healthcare and also kept him occupied withrecreational activities. Mr Lim has found peace, happiness andcontentment after being admitted into SILRA in 2001. Ms Nur Nadzirah and Mr Lim were amongst the 180 beneficiaries andcare givers from the 20 charities invited to the chequepresentation ceremony cum reception. After the ceremony, they weretreated to a concert called Drumming from East to West, featuringthe Singapore Chinese Orchestra and internationally acclaimedpercussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie. Both SPH and SPH Foundation have championed various charitablecauses over the years. Besides giving to charity, their diversecorporate social responsibility efforts include supporting thearts, education, conservation, and sports, among others. For itscontributions to various social causes, SPH was the sole recipientof the prestigious President's Social Service Award (CorporateCategory) last year.
