So as a starting point, some proven lures in the smaller size class that bream will eagerly scoff down include the Jackson T-Pivot, Ecogear PX45 and Atomic K9 Pup. If you’re in a situation where you can get close enough to where bream may be feeding to cast these ultra lights, then there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be the first choice. However, when fishing from a larger boat, especially if you’re one who prefers to stand up and fish, you’re probably going to have to maintain a reasonable distance between you and the fish. In this case, those tiny lures may work, but you may be better off with slightly larger lures that cast further. Some in this class are the Lucky Craft NW Pencil, Lucky Craft 60mm Pencil, Jazz Zappa55 and any one of those 45 to 50mm poppers that are on the market. Such lures aren’t real heavyweights, but they’ll do a better job than the tiny lures if you need some extra distance. Now, when a stiff breeze starts to ruffle the water and puts a bow in your line, it’s time to step up again to big lures. Not only for casting distance, but it may take some extra noise or splashing to get bream to notice the lure when it’s windy. Even though bream would certainly still swipe at a small lure, it’s a matter of gaining their attention and being able to cast and retrieve effectively. So good lures in this category to use are the Lucky Craft Sammy65, Maria Pencil, Berkley Scumdog68 and River2Sea Bubble Pop65. Don’t be afraid to use lures up to 80mm in length if need be, as I’ve witnessed plenty of good bream and small bream for that matter, smash into oversized lures in windy conditions. So the basic idea is to start as small as practical for the situation you find yourself in – then step up in size if need be. In some cases that may mean starting with a big lure. Quite a broad spectrum of lures, ranging from surface, to deep sinking types will catch bream in creeks or rivers. However, snags, depth, current and time of day are all issues to consider. A lot of creeks are quite snaggy due to plenty of fallen trees along the banks, manmade structure or rocks. So it makes no sense to start with lures like sinking metal vibes that simply won’t last too long in this sort of environment. Certainly, there are many areas in some creeks that are relatively snag free, so small metal lures can do quite well in such places.
