Field covers have come of age in many ways, but there are still several things that I wish I could have changed about them. A few of my grudge are not general, but there are certainly a few that I believe are quite the standard in all products, no matter which manufacturer designs or produces them. I happen to be a sports fan and you would find me every weekend at the local grounds watching local teams compete or at my kid’s softball coaching centre. All this sporting action that I witness has got a few pluses and a few minuses about it. First the plus – I get to enjoy a lot of sports. The bad things is that I notice a lot of things I wished I could have changed, and field covers happen to be one of them, pardon my nitpicking, but I really wish cover manufacturers (at least some of them if not all) took a lesson in product design and marketing! • Clearing Up the Confusion The first change that I would love to see in the entire tarps and canvas industry is on the outlook. Every manufacturer and brand should come together and start an educational initiative that dispels the misconception among the people about materials used in manufacturing. Some factions of cover manufacturers and overzealous environmentalists have been pointing fingers at athletic field covers and similar products, accusing them of harming the environment. Unless a thorough reply is not given, consumers will not be assured of the harmlessness of these products. Since there is nothing wrong going on, there is no reason for manufacturers to issue press releases or at least write posts on their company blog about their corporate responsibilities. • More Graphics, Better Colours Agreed that field covers remain levelled with the ground and grounds men stomp on it all day, but that does not mean they cannot be attractive! I hate seeing covers in dreary shades of grey and beige. But thankfully, not all canvas manufacturers think alike. I saw some pretty impressive field covers the other day and kids softball meet. When I asked the coach, he named a local field cover maker, which was a good news given all the substandard products most were making. I also happen to subscribe to the notion that attractive things sell better and make give off a positive effect on all people around it, even if it be as invisible and flat as ground covers. • Self Cleaning Features People have odd fantasies, I dream about owing a personal jet someday, while the head of facilities at my kid’s school dreams of self cleaning athletic field covers! Something that would clean itself up once its job is done, which leaves the grounds men with the only chore of spreading the cover out and then rolling it back. I told him, that science might someday grant his wishes, but for now he is stuck with inanimate field covers.
