In a sign that the "99 percent" movement may be gettingmore creative — and perhaps more mainstream — intheir movement, a crowd of parents, kids and workers fromSacramento took their protest right to the champagne-and-chardonneycrowd at the swank Sequoyah Country Club Thursday in an effortto embarrass their GOP Rep. Dan Lungren. The group of about 40, a coalition of working folks, labor reps,MoveOn.org activists, "occupied" the Oakland hillscountry club at around 6 p.m. as Lungren's campaignre-election fundraiser was in session there. The Congressman,meeting with supporters upstairs, never emerged, but thatdidn't stop the crowd. Chanting "Hey, Lungren, where did you go? We need you inSacramento" and "we are the the 99 percent,"while carrying signs, the crowd marched peacefully through thehistoric Spanish style building as patrons looked on aghast,causing more than a few of the GOP donors and golfers in theclubhouse to do a double take — and to to clutch theirwine glasses in surprise. Here's the SFChronicle Shaky Hand Productions capture of that moment: The protest was noteworthy for some humorous efforts to digLungren, who has been facing a tough re-election bid from Democrat Ami Bera — and who has recently has become the target of a "Take Down Dan Lungren" campaign on both Twitter and Facebook. Protests Thursday focused oncomplaints that Lungren is not in touch with his constituents— while taking digs at his high dollar political fundraisers. Among the signs on hand: "Put down that glass of chardonnay, we need you inSacramento." "How do shrimp and cocktails help the people?" "Represent our country, not just the country clubbers." "Fundraise for good jobs, not millionaires. "Where is my Congressman? I have issues to talk about." One little girl had a sign saying "Way to Sacramento: Take580 East. Transfer to 5 North. You Shouldn't Miss it!" One GOPer on hand, who wore the name tag of "WallySmith," got into a debate with the protesters. "If these are the 99 percent, they're the folksthat barge into your house," he told them. "Youdon't have respect for other people." But at least one other Republican in attendence, Kris Urdaax, saidshe welcomed the protest. "It's our American privilege," she said. "Iwas hanging out in Redwood City last night," she said, notingthat President Obama brought her out to speak her mind. Lungren's strategist, Rob Stutzman, told us earlierThursday the Congressman had appeared at a public event justthat day — and spoke to his constituants. Still, one after another, the protesters told their stories —about reduced hours at work, higher tuitions and bigger bills.Protester Steven Gonzalez of Sacramento said that he just wantedLungren to know that "we want him to stop giving tax breaksto the big corporatons…and he can speak directly tous." With Lungren's seat targeted by Democrats as vulnerable inNovember, these protests aren't likely to go away.
