In recent years, the dogs responsible for the bulk of deaths are pit bulls and Rottweilers. Other breeds were also responsible for deaths, but to a much lesser extent. The following breeds have also shown a propensity for violent behavior and have been known to kill people and other animals: German Shepherds Huskies Alaskan Malamutes Doberman Pinschers Chows Great Danes St. Bernards, and Akitas Owners of all dogs, but specifically these breeds should understand the risks associated with owning dogs that pose a threat or danger to others. Some training, either personal or professional, can go a long way towards domesticating and modifying the behavior of dogs prone to violent behavior. But when an attack does occur, it would be wise for the pet owner to carry some form of dog bite insurance to help with the costs involved. One of the most horrifying examples of the lack of breed predictability is the October 2000 death of a 6-week-old baby, which was killed by her family’s Pomeranian dog. The average weight of a Pomeranian is about 4 pounds, and they are not thought of as a dangerous breed. However, that particular species was bred to be watchdogs. The baby’s uncle left the infant unattended, on a bed with the dog, while he prepared her feeding bottle in the kitchen. Upon his return, the dog was mauling the baby. The infant died a short time afterwards. It has been pointed out that the dog bite epidemic as a whole involves all dogs and all dog owners, not just the breeds most likely to kill. In all fairness, therefore, it must be noted that: Any dog, treated harshly or trained to attack, may bite a person Any dog can be turned into a dangerous dog The owner or handler most often is responsible for creating a dog with a propensity for violence A responsible owner can win the love and respect of a dog, no matter its breed. One cannot simply look at an individual dog, recognize its breed, and then state whether or not it is going to attack. The care and concern that an owner gives to the dog will help mold that pet into a docile, more loving animal. But in certain situations, even a well-behaved dog may suddenly strike out and bite or injure someone, which is why having dog bite insurance makes so much sense.
