It’s a sad sight to see a helpless animal struggling to survive or is being mistreated by its owners. Thousands of cases get filed in local animal shelters and rescue centers about dogs that are suffering, ether because of accidents or because of their abusive owners. Many of these dogs get physical damages and scars that they carry till the end of their lives. Some of them even become too aggressive that they growl and snarl at anyone who comes near them, even if the person is there to help. Rescuing dogs is one of the most fulfilling volunteer activities anyone can do. If you see or know a dog that’s in trouble, here’s a short guideline on how to rescue them. Don’t panic Seeing the dog fighting for their live by dragging itself to safety or hiding off somewhere shouldn’t panic you. You want to keep a clear head and think about what to do next. Check if the dog is alone, or wait until they’re alone to help them, don’t rush into the situation. Monitor how they move if they can still walk or run. Difficulty in moving could be a sign of injury or illnesses like degenerative myelopathy. Call authorities If you can, try to contact a local rescue center or any local authority to help you get the dog out of harm’s way. If you’re dealing with an abusive owner, you can’t just walk up to them and take their dog, you might get in trouble and end up in a fight. Better yet, you can call in anonymously to these rescue centers and report how the person is treating their dog. Take the initiative If the dog is alone, it might be best to take the initiative and drive the dog to the shelter yourself. If you’re going to do this, it’s best to know how to handle an injured dog. Use your handkerchief as a muzzle. You can never be too careful with an injured dog, so keep their jaws closed. Take them to the rescue or animal center and tell them where and when you found the dog. Apply basic first aid If the dog has a big cut or is bleeding, apply first aid before going to the shelter. You should also check if it shakes while moving. This could be caused by internal injury or degenerative myelopathy, especially amongst older dogs. Try to keep them as safe and comfortable as you can by earning their trust. You can feed them and clean their wounds, and then you drop them off at the rescue center.
