Dance is always believed to be a form of worship in India. Perhaps it is considered to be one of to one of the optimum methods of expressing gratitude towards the Almighty God. It is performed with complete dedication and devotion. Of all the dances which are performed throughout the earth; the Indian Classical dance forms is the most challenging because here facial expressions are also emphasized along with the steps. If you really want to master the skills by controlling the body movements start learning from the tender age. The dance teacher plays a good role in molding up your career if you are willing to adopt it as a profession. If the records of the Archeological Survey of India are to be believed, then Odissi is the oldest dance form of India. As the name suggests, it gas nurtured in the state of Orissa and is widely practiced here and other parts of eastern India. In fact, it is one of the eight classical dance forms of India. It also finds its name in the Natya Shastra written by Bharat Muni. There it is referred to as Odra-Magadhi which were performed near the Udaigiri Hills in around first century BCE. The British rulers tried to suppress it but it again grew into prominence after independence. One of the major factors which differentiates Odissi dance from the other Indian classical dance form is the Tribhangi pose. The dance is performed by the independent movement of head, chest and pelvis. According to Dancer in Kolkata who performs this art, the dance is performed on a basic square stance known as Chauka or Chouka which signifies none other than Lord Jagannath. The Odissi dancer has t o stamp her foot and pose different postures according to the Indian sculptures. The stance is regarded as Bhangas. The first information about the Odissi dance was discovered in the Manchapuri cave in Udayagiri which had been carved during the regime of king Kharavela. There are also evidences that it was developed as a court dance apart from being performed in the temples. After the archeological excavations led out at several ancient temples of Orissa, many dance sculptures have been discovered especially at the Sun temple in Konark and Brahmeswara temple in Bhubaneswar. During the Mughal era the role of these dancers changed as they become mere court entertainers. During the British time, the dance and the dancers suffered a major setback as Temple Dance was strictly prohibited. The dancer in kolkatais taught to focus on two major areas which are Nritya and Abhinaya which literally means pure dance and recitation of poetry. It is a customary act which has been followed from the ancient times. The recitation is based on the sacred and religious hymns. It was again in the sixth century that the Gotipura tradition came into prominence. This is because the Vaishnava disapproved dancing of women. So the male dancers learnt the art from the Devadesi and performed it. There is no doubt in fact that the dance form gives aesthetic pleasure to the dancer.
