A few dumb mistakes to avoid when maintaining a car

Automotive

Regular maintenance and inspection of a car is extremely important in order to increase its longevity and improve performance level. Maintaining a car may apparently seem to be an easy task, but there are many important things that you should keep in mind. In fact, there are many people who often commit very silly mistakes when maintaining or repairing a car. However, I don’t want my readers to repeat the same dumb mistakes. So, here I would like to make you aware of the mistakes that you must avoid to commit.

Let us now take a look at five common mistakes that people mostly commit -

  • One of the most common mistakes that people often commit when maintaining a car is neglecting minor repairs or maintenance. Remember that ignoring simple preventive maintenance, like changing the oil can damage the engine and other parts of the car. Hence, it is very important to change the oil after the said period of time (say, after every 5000 miles). You must also regularly change the transmission fluid, check the coolant level, and the tire pressure of the car.
  • Another common mistake that people often commit is ignoring the tires.  Driving on underinflated tires can adversely affect the conditions of the tires. It can shorten the life of the tires and can lead to unwanted damages and wear and tear. Hence, you must always ensure that the tires are properly inflated. In fact, keeping the tires always inflated can improve the mileage of your vehicle by upto 3.3 percent.
  • People are often found to ignore dashboard warning lights. Dashboard warning lights are warning lights that can indicate or warn you about the serious problems of the car. These problems can lead to expensive repair and even unsafe driving. So, it is always advisable to keep an eye on dashboard warning lights – check engine light, oil light, temperature light and brake light. Ignoring any of these lights can lead you to massive repair and expenditure that include replacement of the engine, and repair expensive catalytic converter.
  • Do not ask the mechanic which part of the car should be replaced and to repair. Remember that today’s vehicles are extremely complex and a little difficult to diagnose. Some vehicle symptoms of repair and replacement are really hard to understand and misleading. For example, you may determine that spark plugs are needed to be replaced, whereas MAF sensors are needed to be cleaned. If you tell your mechanic to change the spark plugs instead of diagnosing the problem, he will do it and charge from you, leaving the problem unresolved
  •  Be sure about the problem that you are facing with your car. If possible, note down the symptoms of the problems, before going to the car repair shop. This will help you explain the mechanic about the problem you are facing. Remember that failing to proper communication with the auto mechanic can lead to wrong diagnosis, which in turn can even lead to spending more money.
