Friday, 20 April 2012 The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue and RegionalMinister for Prince Edward Island, and the Honourable RobertHenderson, Provincial Minister of Tourism and Culture, joinedCharlottetown Harbour Authority officials to announce funding for astudy which will explore the option of a second cruise ship berthin the Port of Charlottetown. Our Government is focused on jobs, growth and long-termprosperity. We understand the importance of the cruise industry inthe growth of Atlantic Canada s tourism sector and thecontribution it makes to strengthen our regional economy, saidMinister Shea, on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt,Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency(ACOA) and La Francophonie. That is why we support the efforts ofthe Charlottetown Harbour Authority Inc. as they examine thefeasibility of expanding the Port of Charlottetown and takeadvantage of the immediate demand in the cruise industry. Charlottetown Harbour Authority Inc. is engaging consultants toconduct a study that will identify engineering requirements andcost estimates to establish a second cruise ship berth to theCharlottetown Harbour. The Prince Edward Island government recognizes the importance ofthe cruise ship sector in growing our tourism industry and creatinga stronger economy, said Minister Henderson. Our government ispleased to support our industry partners in their efforts tostrengthen tourism in the province and promote Prince Edward Islandas a world-class destination. The Government of Canada, through ACOA, has invested $37,500 tohelp with the study. The Government of Prince Edward Island,through the Department of Tourism and Culture, has also invested anadditional $5,000 and the Charlottetown Harbour Authority Inc. isinvesting $7,500. This study will address the feasibility of a second berth on theCharlottetown Waterfront, which would accommodate the increasingdemand from the Cruise Industry, states John Cormier,Vice-President of the Board for the Charlottetown HarbourAuthority. We would like to thank both ACOA and Tourism PEI forcontinuing to support the Cruise industry on PEI and newinitiatives such as this to sustain and grow this business.
