When To Go To An Emergency Dentist In Calgary

Health

It can be difficult to determine whether you have a dental emergency, or whether you can wait a day or two to visit your regular dentist. Here are a list of reasons or signs that you need to go to an emergency dentist in Calgary, rather than waiting for an appointment with your regular dentist.

A Chipped Tooth: If you bit down on something and felt your tooth crack or spit out a piece of the tooth, you need to go to an Emergency dentist in Calgary right away. In most instances, the chipped part of your tooth or cracked area can be repaired if the repair is done within a couple of hours of injury. If you wait too long, the repair may not be able to be made, as the tooth or nerve could be dead by then. If this happens, the tooth will need to be pulled and replaced with a dental implant or bridge. If possible, fill up a small sandwich bag or compress with ice to place on your check to prevent swelling until you get to the dental office. This will allow the dentist to look at the tooth and work on it right away.

A Tooth Was Knocked Out: If you knock a tooth out, place the tooth in a cup or container of milk and head right to an emergency dentist in Calgary. Just like with a chipped tooth, there is only so much time that can pass before the tooth or nerve dies. Once that happens, the tooth cannot be reattached. Heading straight to a dentist gives you the best chance of having your own tooth reattached.

Swelling in the Cheeks or Jaw Accompanied By Tooth Pain: Tooth pain in and of itself is not a reason to go to an emergency dentist. You likely have a cavity, but that can wait until your dentist can see you. However, if you have this pain accompanied by jaw or cheek swelling, you need to be seen right away. This is a sign that you have an abscess and/or infection. When this happens, a root canal will likely need to be done. It is important that you not delay in getting to a dentist if these symptoms develop. A tooth infection can spread to your blood stream, which can make you very sick or even kill you if it goes on too long.

A Broken Jaw: If you suspect you have a broken jaw, you may be inclined to go to the emergency room. However, while they can treat you there, the better place to go is to an emergency dentist in Calgary. If you indeed have a broken jaw, you are going to need to visit a dentist to ensure your jaw realigns properly anyways. Therefore, it is easier to cut out the hospital completely and go straight to an emergency dental office. When possible, place ice lightly on the jaw area to prevent swelling until you get to the office.

Dental Bleeding That Does Not Stop: Dental bleeding is not all that uncommon. When children lose teeth, there may be a bit of bleeding or if we brush or floss vigorously, there may be some slight bleeding. However, if the bleeding has been going on for longer than 30 minutes and won't stop, you need to visit an emergency dentist. You may have caused a cut that needs to be looked at, or there could be something else going on which is causing the bleeding to not stop. Unfortunately, there is no way to know whether it is something serious or not without having a dentist look at it and get the bleeding to stop.
