The walkway in your garden should reflect the overall look of your landscaping. For example, if you have created a peaceful hideaway with soft lines and curves, you won't want a walkway that appears blocky and rigid. Stepping stones come in a variety of designs to complement nearly any garden look, or you can create your own stones with basic materials. The downside to some slate tiles is that they are thin compared to standard stepping stones, so repeatedly placing weight on them over uneven ground may cause them to crack. Fortunately, there are a few ways to avoid this. Place a bedding layer of at least 1 inch of sand beneath each tile to create a level surface if you live in an area where the sand will not erode quickly. You can also thicken the tile by spreading an even level of mortar along the back of each tile, basically doubling the stone's thickness. A layer of sand beneath this is still a wise idea to keep the stone level. Outdoor slate tiles are also available from some retailers and should be used whenever possible. Mix and Match Look into the premade stones available at your local home improvement retailers and find a way to mix and match the various shapes and colors to create a style that is truly your own. You may want to use red squares bordered by red hexagons in one area of your garden, then branch off to an area of gray squares bordered by gray hexagons, then create a connecting path with alternating red and gray circular garden stones. Shaped stones may also be available from specialty garden shops. Fish, footprints and sun shapes are often easily found, while more specific shapes may require online shopping. Create Your Own Add something of yourself to your garden by creating your own stepping stones from a concrete mix. Mold kits are available from many home improvements and craft stores, but you can truly make the peculiar stones suit your garden by adding something to the mix. Place decorative stones or keepsake items into the mold, then pour the concrete on top of them. When you invert the mold to remove the concrete, your item will be on top. If you're a car enthusiast, try embedding your old license plates in the stepping stones. For a more delicate look, use semi-precious tumbled stones such as amethyst or jasper. If you want to keep the natural theme throughout your garden, glue individual leaves, flowers or sprigs of foliage to the mold with a thin coating of rubber cement or white glue to keep them from floating away when the concrete is poured. The items will either rip out of the concrete when the mold is removed or slowly disintegrate over time, but they will leave impressions of their texture and shape in the stones.
