The center of the universe for core Apple product enthusiasts isSan Francisco"s Moscone Center this week, as the AppleWorldwide Developers Conference started Monday morning. Apple brokeout it"s biggest guns first, with apps, new software, and anew, and supposedly "the most beautiful computer we"veever made" being unveiled by with top company executives. Well, top company executives, plus The Stig from "TopGear". Actually, a Stig impersonator who played a racing video game against Apple"s VP ofEngineering Craig Federighi. Despite the much ballyhooed debut of the new MacBook Pro and the unveiling of the new iOS6 , one of the most exciting developments of the developersconference is the news that Siri is coming to the iPad. The popular"talking assistant" feature will chat you up on theiPad with the release of iOS6. Be aware, though, that Siri will only work on the new, next-geniPad. iPad 2 users, you will be unable to talk the talk with Siri. Siri actually got an opportunity to warm up the crowd prior toApple CEO Tim Cook"s keynote address. Siri played the part ofthe opening act, ribbing some of the iPhone"s topcompetitors. "I am looking forward to the new Samsung,"Siri quipped, "the refrigerator." She also cracked some jokes about a competing smartphone platform"s naming conventions . All kidding aside, Siri is getting some new capabilities on theiOS6 platform. She has updated capabilities for providing sportsscores and statistics. She will be able to speak differentlanguages in different regions. And she"s going to beintegrated with several popular apps, like Yelp and OpenTable. "We"ve integrated with Rotten Tomatoes ," said Apple VP of iOS Software Scott Forstall. That couldhave been worded a little better. Siri isn"t just making the leap from the iPhone to the iPad– she"s also going into automobiles. "We"re working with car manufacturers to include abutton that will bring up Siri," Forstall told the WWDCaudience. No specific details were announced, but Apple is indiscussions with GM, Mercedes, BMW, and other manufacturers. Mercedes has already announced that Siri will be included intoit"s a-Class cars in Europe this year. The Worldwide Developers Conference continues through Friday, June15.
