It was also served as a primary port in the Mughal period with the capacity to harbor 84 ships at one time. Portuguese were the acknowledge master of Surat sea trade in 16th century. A picturesque fortress still symbolizes the glorious period of port trade. The place experienced the prosperity when Dutch and Portuguese set up their business here. Surat Castle is the main attraction of this place. It was built by Muhammad Tughlak in 14th century. Another old castle built by the Sultan of Gujarat in 1546 holds visit worthy attraction. Dutch Garden, Sardar Patel Museum, Rangupavan, Dumas (sea side) and Textile Market are other most visited places. Chintanamani Jain Temple, a well significant religious temple is counted as a most visited place here. This temple holds a unique charm for its wooden artistry and decorations made with vegetable dyes. Ambika Niketan Temple, Bardoli, Dandi, Suvali Beach, Ubharat, Swaminarayan Temple Tithal Beach,Choppati, Ukai are some other places to see in Surat. Gujarati, English and Hindi are well spoken language in this city. Navratri, Ganesh Chaturthi, Diwali are celebrated here along with the The kite-flying festival of Uttarayan generally celebrates in the time of Makar sankranti and the festival represents the vibrant cultures of the Gujaratis.
