Acupuncture and acupuncture needles have been in existence for the last 2, 500 years. They are main components of the traditional Chinese health care system. Its general theory suggests that there are patterns of energy flow known as qi or chi through the body that are essential for good health. Interruptions of this flow are thought to be responsible for all diseases. Thus, acupuncture seeks to correct any imbalances of flow found in detectable points near the skin through stimulation. These points are known as the acupuncture points or acupoints. Skin stimulation usually employs skin penetration through the use of thin metal needles that are manually or electrically stimulated. They come in between 10 to 130 millimetres or 0.5 to 5 inches. The shorter and thin ones are generally used for the areas in the face and close to the eyes while the longer ones are used in more in fleshy areas of the body. The needle tips must be sharp and well made in order to reduce the insertion resistance into the body. Too thin tips would bend which causes pain to the patient. On the other hand, too thick tips do not enter easily into the skin which also causes pain to the patient.In case modern silicone coated needles are used patients even claim that the insertion of acupuncture needles are not as painful as injections or blood sampling. This includes the promotion of health and well-being, prevention of illness and treatment of various medical conditions. Acupuncture has already transcended its association to just being a mere pain control mechanism. In fact, the World Health Organization recognizes the use of acupuncture to treat a wide range of medical problems. Acupuncture is believed to treat Gastritis and Hyperacidity, Spastic Colon, Constipation and Diarrhoea. Respiratory disorders like Sinusitis, Sore throat, Bronchitis, Asthma and recurrent Chest Infections may also be treated. Neurological and muscular disorders, urinary, menstrual and reproductive problems may also be addressed. Physical problems caused by tension, stress and other emotional conditions are healed as well. Well-trained practitioners just have to locate the qi or chi through traditional means or with the aid of electrical point finders o give remedy to a specific problem. Possible Side Effects Studies show that no side effects occur after acupuncture needles are inserted or even after the entire process is over. Acupuncture is a very safe method that advocates natural healing and improved bodyfunction. Patients just experience a tiny stinging sensation that immediately goes away. However, patients need to be very careful when choosing an acupuncturist.
