Is there such a thing as healthy weight loss? It’s not hard to find dozens of weight loss diets and programs, but are they good for you? If so, do they really bring results? Unfortunately, most such programs are not conducive to optimum health, as well as have an extremely high failure rate, particularly long-term. Let’s examine three diets as examples. The first is the HCG diet, in which you get a hormone shot every day and must eat only five hundred calories a day, and eat on a rigid schedule. Yes, when you suddenly reduce your food intake to 500 calories daily, you’re going to lose weight. But is this healthy? Even though this caloric restriction lasts for only a certain period of time, while the dieter is restricting calories she is also restricting nutrient intake, therefore slowly becoming deficient in vital nutrients. Then, what happens when the period of caloric restriction is over? Most HCG dieters regain whatever weight they had lost. In addition, nobody likes to feel deprived, and this diet is severely depriving in every sense of the word, literally putting people at risk of starvation. It is not sustainable, so most HCG dieters quit early on in the game. Next, let’s take a look at commercial weight loss programs, such as Nutri-System and Weight Watchers. How healthy are these and similar programs? If you are familiar with them, you know they allow considerably more food consumption than the HCG diet, which is a point in their favor. Still, they are based on some level of deprivation in that you’re only allowed to consume a certain number of calories and they don’t provide any specially formulated snacks that will curb your appetite. In addition, they do not discourage the consumption of processed foods, which are not healthy. And what about long-term results? Over 90% of people who go on a commercial diet program regain all their weight back after getting off the program. Finally, let’s study low-carb diets. Of the three, this type of diet is probably the healthiest and allows dieters to eat to satisfaction. But low-carb is neither the healthiest nor most effective diet plan long term. First, most low-carb diets restrict carbohydrate consumption to fewer than 51 grams daily, which soon leads to lower energy levels and clouded thinking. The reason is that forcing the body to convert protein and fat into glucose is an inefficient and energy-heavy process. Second, eating a low-carb diet for longer than a period of a year often interferes with the body’s thyroid hormone function. Third, most people feel deprived when the only carbs they are allowed are vegetables. Finally, low-carb diets encourage a large consumption of saturated fat. This can not only keep some people from losing weight, but also lead to heart problems down the line. So, what’s the verdict? Is there no such thing as healthy weight loss? I am happy to tell you that there is. A truly healthy weight loss program takes into account all facets of health and potential reasons for weight gain. It provides a cleansing element, because toxic overload is one reason for the increased production of fat cells in the body. It stipulates the consumption of whey protein from the healthiest source of milk possible, because whey protein is the most easily absorbed form of protein as well the most effective at building lean muscles mass. A healthy weight loss program provides healthy snacks that curb your appetite. It provides the full spectrum of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that your body needs for optimum health, includes a healthy level of carbohydrates, does not make you feel deprived, and – best of all – actually works, for both the long and short term.
