Open education offers the advantage of education to those who cannot afford the facilities of higher education through regular on-campus studies at colleges and universities. India is a developing country, where most of the education opportunities have been confined to a particular section of society. Dr. B.R Ambedkar Open University, previously known as Andhra Pradesh Open University is a first of its kind educational institute located in the city of Hyderabad, Karnataka. An Overview Formerly known as Andhra Pradesh Open University, Dr. B.R Ambedkar University was established in 1982 by a State Legislature Act, inaugurated by the then president of India Mr. Giani Zail Singh. It was renamed to its current name in October 1991 to honour the birth centenary of the Dr. B.R Ambedkar. The University has a unique pedagogy, where it employs innovative tools and methods to disseminate knowledge. There is a special focus on students who cannot attend the regular classes due to any reason. It uses various media such as TV, film, audio cassette, radio and printed study material for imparting education. There are 117 distance learning centres affiliated with the university located in all the districts of the state. A number of well trained counsellors operate these distance learning centres and ensure that every problem of students is sorted out. Location and Campus The university is located in Jubilee Hills, the campus spread over an area of 53.56 acres. It is divided into different blocks for smooth administration and better functioning. Other facilities include an Auditorium, an open plaza, an extensive library, Science and Technology Multifunctional Lab (STML), a multimedia lab and a Language Lab. The campus is equipped with high-speed LAN connectivity. Courses Offered There are various courses that the university offers on undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma levels. Some of the flagship courses are: • Post Graduate Diploma in Business Finance • Post Graduate Diploma in Environment Studies • Master’s Degree in Library & Information Science Special Services SC/ST Cell: The University has dedicated itself to social causes and is making efforts to change the state of society. It has established a SC/ST Cell, which intends to work for the welfare of the underprivileged and backward castes by ensuring effective implementation of policies of the government which have been specially created for SC/ST. Library: The library has 1,37,793 books, subscribes to 18 newspapers, and 173 journals. It is also subscribed to 4 e-journals, such as Cambridge University Press, JSTOR and Nature. It is fully computerized and all the knowledge resources are available to all the academic departments through LAN. It has earned the priceless gift of knowledge from eminent personalities such as Sri NAarla Venkateswara Rao, Prof G.M Reddy and Prof V.S Prasad (former Vice Chancellor).
