India is the seventh largest country in the world in terms of geographical area and the second largest in terms of population. As such it really becomes a task to ensure that each part of the country and every section of society is accessing all the basic facilities. The north-eastern states have witnessed disparity, specially in the number of quality educational institutions in the region to that of other parts of the country. The region has produced renowned super computer scientists such as Dr Bijoy P Bhatkar, but still lacks in setting up of new value-based technical institutions to meet the needs of this region. Assam is one of the states that is witnessing the harmful effects of lack of quality educational institutions. The government has recognised a trend of brain drain from the state. It also has a negative impact on the employability index of the state. An Overview Understanding the needs of a national level educational institution in the north-eastern part of the country, the government of India established Assam University in 1994 through the Assam (Central University Act, 1989.) Set amidst picturesque location of Dargakona, Silchar, the university has fast emerged as the preferred choice for students, especially for resident students who do not wish to travel too far in search of quality education. The multi-disciplinary university offers courses in almost 35 fields through sixteen schools. There are five districts under the jurisdiction of Assam University which are a home to 56 undergraduate colleges. Spread over 600 acres, the university campus is located in South Assam, which shares its borders with other sister states Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Meghalaya. The university bifurcated to a newer campus in Diphu in 1997. This campus has six of the total sixteen schools. Courses & Admissions There are sixteen schools which offer courses in various disciplines such as: • Life Sciences • Physical Sciences • Languages • Humanities • Social Sciences • Information Sciences • Technology and Management Studies • Environmental Sciences There are several undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered in these disciplines. In addition, Assam University also grants validation to many diplomas and certificate courses. The admission policy of AU follows a diversified approach, where some of the courses admit students through entrance tests (engineering and management among others) and other fill seats using merit lists and personal interviews. Campus Facilities Library is often called the soul of any educational institution. Assam University has a Central Library which also doubles up as a computer learning centre. With a total area of 37,000 square feet, the library serves to the needs of not only the state, but to the entire North-eastern region. It functions as an all inclusive knowledge resource dedicated for efficient retrieval and dissemination of information. The library has categorized its knowledge resource in 13 separate categories such as Social Science and Humanities, Gift Collection, North East Collection, Digital Collection and others. The computer centre is connected to internet through optic fibres providing a bandwidth of 1Gbps. The centre functions as a Satellite Interactive Terminal “Virtual Classroom” under CEC-UGC EDUSAT Network and is funded by ISRO. It is only one of the 62 centres in India with this facility. The labs of university are equipped with the latest and technologically advanced equipment.
