ABC reported that Australian Prime Minister Ms Julia Gillard wasnot consulted on the decision to bring more than 1,700 foreignworkers to work on a major mine project in Western Australia. The workers have been granted visas under the first EnterpriseMigration Agreement to work at Ms Gina Rinehart's AUD 9 billion RoyHill iron ore project. Immigration minister Mr Chris Bowen signed off on the deal but MsGillard was not informed about it until Wednesday after her returnfrom the United States. Skills Minister Mr Chris Evans says the deal is a necessary step tomanage the workforce. He said that "There'll be thousands andthousand of jobs available in Australia. First preference will goto Australians, who want to work in these projects, that are oftenin very remote areas, but the EMA is part of managing that massiveinvestment pipeline and peak construction activity." He added that "Tens of thousands of Australians will get jobopportunities in construction of these projects in the next fewyears. But we will need overseas labor to supplement that and it'sbetter that it comes in temporarily than permanently because thosejobs will be part of a peak activity, which won't last and thetemporary top up of foreign labor is the sensible economicsolution." But the government is facing an angry backlash from unions andwithin its own ranks over the move. Labor backbencher Mr Doug Cameron says he is gob smacked andbemused by the decision, and does not believe Labor's caucus willbe comfortable with it either. He said that "I'm gob smacked. Inthe week where Australian workers are being marched off the job inKurri Kurri and Tullamarine that we're marching Chinese workersonto Roy Hill. It just defies logic to me." Outspoken MP Mr Bob Katter also faulted the Government's move, branding it a ludicrous decision which erodes confidence in thenational economy. He added that "These people are so lacking inpatriotism and so committed to looking after the interests ofcorporations that invariably are foreign owned or foreign financed, that they have agreed to fly in people from overseas. They willundermine our awards and they will take your jobs, and I don't justmean in mining it'll spread beyond that. The Australian people willnot stand for this." Source - ABC.
