It is the parent's responsibility to provide a safe, secure home for their children and meet their needs. Raising happy and healthy kids takes common sense, responsible budgeting of time and a good support system. Kids should not be allowed to set their own schedule or run rampant as that only teaches irresponsibility. This ensures that the kids get their daily tasks done and you still have time to take care of your husband and of your business or work. Of course, special family events or necessary shopping change the routine a bit, but everything still gets done. Common sense helps with the daily decisions that affect all of us. Sure it would be more fun to run errands all day, visit friends, bring home take-out food instead of cooking. But proper time must be spent on laundry, dirty dishes, cooking and cleaning. I try to feed the kids balanced and varied meals with lots of fruit and vegetables, and give them daily vitamins. Common sense dictates for them to wear jackets outside when playing if it is chilly, not to serve dinner too late, not to keep them out too late on school nights and make sure they get enough sleep each night. Having fun and spending time with the kids is also important. This makes them feel important which they are, and it gives me a break from adult stuff. They may not be adults with financial and other worries, but they still have concerns or questions pertaining to their age that should be addressed. Spending quality time with your kids can remove stress and helps restore perspective. Speaking with them and answering questions instead of constantly badgering them also creates a closer bond. I try to budget my time as best as possible between family and work. Business paperwork, making school lunches and picking out clothes often happens after their bedtime. My husband and I have a good support system between each other, and we will take turns with the kids to give each other a break. Raising happy and healthy kids takes planning and working together. Children need structure and learn to give respect in such an environment. Knowing they have food to eat, a place to sleep, and parents who love and care for them go a long way as they grow.
