I recently saw a judgment enforcer's web site, where he brags that he takes all judgments - state, local, federal, tribal, overseas, and even galactic. That judgment enforcer was not a lawyer, didn't own a collection company, and he had a home office. In my opinion no one individual has any reason to look at judgments not on earth. Certain inexperienced judgment enforcers and collection lawyers take judgments too distant from them, and then find out they should have kept to recovering judgments near them. My articles are my opinions and are not, legal advice. I'm a judgment broker, and not an attorney. If you need a strategy to use or legal advice, you should retain a lawyer. When recovering judgments, there are 3 reasons to only enforce judgments local to you: 1) You get to know your court clerks, process servers, Sheriffs, and judges. Even though it shouldn't make any difference, the better you know them, the smoother things will go for you inside their courts or offices. 2) You will have more chances to surveil the debtor, will save costs and travel time, and it will be easier to calendar and attend debtor examinations. 3) Each county and state is unique, and there's differences in each county Sheriff and court system, which make local judgment enforcement important. There isn't any need to be local if recording liens, as lien recordings may be done through the mail. Alternatively, attachment judgment recovery tactics will likely need at least occasional appearances. Some examples include wage garnishments, bank levies, oppositions to exemption or third party claims; or perhaps contesting bankruptcy filings, particularly when judgment debtors have concealed some of their assets. In certain judgment recovery situations, remote collection attempts may make sense if the court permits telephonic appearances, or when you're in the mood to hire an attorney to appear for you. Naturally when your judgment is big and the judgment debtor has a bunch of assets, you may decide to travel, and pay for a place to stay near the local court when necessary. Certain judgment enforcers only take "slam dunk" judgments where the debtors are rich and most likely will not resist attempts to levy their assets. In this circumstance, they might take judgments that are far away. Unfortunately, that means they reject almost every judgment. Judgment enforcers might want to think about referring judgments they do not want, to a judgment broker. Recovering a far away judgment can be attractive if it is large enough to justify the cost of having to travel, or paying an attorney to appear for you. Everything depends on the risk and reward ratios. When you have lots of money, this can make sense. When you can't afford to travel, don't accept distant judgments. The main reasons to work only local judgments is to increase the chances for successful judgment recoveries, and reduce your costs.
