LONDON - The death of the only person convicted of the 1988Lockerbie bombing which killed 270 people should not prevent apublic inquiry into his trial, Britain's press said Monday. Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi died on Sunday, almost three yearsafter the Scottish government freed him from jail on compassionategrounds following his prostate cancer diagnosis. Megrahi was found guilty of blowing up Pan Am flight 103 over theScottish town of Lockerbie, which killed all 259 people on boardalong with 11 people on the ground. Britain's newspapers believe that his initial conviction by aScottish court sitting in the Netherlands in 2001 was flawed andcalled for an official probe. "With so many loose ends remaining and so many questions about theoriginal trial unresolved, the Scottish government should agree toa public inquiry into the tragedy," said the left-leaningIndependent's editorial. "Megrahi's death is no reason to stop trying to get to the truth,"it added. Most of the passengers on the Boeing 747 jet headed from London toNew York were Americans. Megrahi, 60, was released in 2009 after doctors said he had onlythree months to live, sparking outrage in the United States andBritain. The Guardian said Megrahi's death removed a "running sore inrelations between London and Washington" but was doubtful it wouldhelp answer questions about the initial verdict. "One might assume that the truth about the bombing might finallyemerge," said its editorial. "But that hope could be premature." The liberal broadsheet said the task of rebuilding Libya followingthe death of veteran leader Moamer Kadhafi could hold up attemptsto review any new evidence. "Megrahi outlived his leader by seven months, but both may wellhave taken the truth of what happened to their grave," it added. "But if ever a crime of this magnitude warranted an independentreview it is this." The Times' leading article said the death brought a "disgracefulepisode to an end", but was hopeful that Libya's new leaders wouldcooperate in providing information. "Thousands of people's lives were ruined by the callous lack ofcompassion shown by those who planned and perpetrated it," it said."Al-Megrahi did not warrant the reward of being permitted to gohome. "It is to be hoped that the elections due on June 19 will produce anew Libyan government that will seek to unearth the truth aboutLockerbie," it added.
