Peacefully located on the bank of Tunga rivers Sringeri is known as a hill town and a taulk headquarter which is located in Chikmagalur district in karnataka. This place also holds a religious value. According to Hindu Mythology this place is the first Muth which was established by Adi Shankaracharya, Hindu theologian in the 8th century CE. The name Sringeri is originated from Rishyashringa-giri, a hill which is believed as the hideaway of Rishi Vibhandaka and his son Rishyashringa who relate to the Ramayana, a Hindu epic. According to legends, Adi Shankaracharya stayed here for twelve years. This place is well denoted with many ancient anecdotes. This is considered as one of the Shakthi Sthalas in India. It is the first Muth out of the original four ashram founded by Adi Shankaracharya. This place is a part of Western Ghats. This place offers an eye soothing view along with some magnificent water falls. The other attractions of this place are Agumbe (a spectacular sunset point), Jog Falls (one of the highest waterfalls in India), Kudremukh (an entertaining hill-station) and Sringagiri hills (the birth place of Sage Rishyasringa). Sringiri consists of many religious temples. Sri Sharadamba temple and Sri Vidyashankara temple are quite famous. Sri Sharadamba temple is dedicated to Devi Saraswati, goddess of learning and wisdom. Legend says, the temple has a simple shrine which dates back to the time of Adi Shankaracharya. Later that old sandalwood image was replaced with a stone and gold image by Vidyaranya in fourteenth century. First the temple was built with wood but it was totally burnt due to a fire accident and then the temple was reconstructed followed by the traditional south Indian style of architecture. Sri Vidyashankara temple was built by the founder of Vijayanagar Empire, Vidyaranya around 1357-58 C.E. The temple holds a number of sculptures from Hindu, Buddhist and Jain mythologies. The temple represents a rare architecture which symbolizes the astronomical proficiency of medieval south Indian architects. The main temple hall contains12 pillars designated for the 12 signs of the zodiac. The temple is expertly designed and each pillar of the temple are highlighted by sun rays according to the specific time of the year. The Muth at Sringeri is religiously regarded as Sringeri Sharada Peetham. It is considered as one of the four Hindu Advaita maths established by Adi Shankaracharya. It is also known as Dakshinamnaya Sringeri Sharada peetam. Kannada is the predominant language along with the other languages like Tulu, Konkani, Telugu and Malayalam. Many festivals are well celebrated at Sringiri such as Sharada sharan Navarathri, Shivarathri, Rathothsavam. The nearest Airport to Sringeri is Mangalore airport. Nearest rail head is Udupi station which is well connected with the other cities in south India. Bus services connect this place with all cities in and around the place.
