When we were still children our world was full of fantasies - toys that come alive, genies, horses that would fly, our dream of our hair turning yellow as we grow powerful. That was what childhood meant. Animes, fairytales, and cartoons, all made up from the imagination of adults, but for children it was magic. Magic was believed to have started way back during the prehistoric era, when cave men sill roamed the Earth, and they were believed to be the first ever magicians. They employed magic during burials and in their cave painting, according to some scholars. It was perceived that cave paintings were made by the cavemen before hunting begins believing that it would come alive. In ancient Greece, magic was more intertwined to their religion, though some of them disagree and ridiculed it in their writings; they do still believe in the existence of magic, the did go as having a goddess of magic and religion named Hecate. In addition, one of the Greeks’ greatest philosophers said that, “If one wishes to cause harm to anyone, with a bit o magic, they can let the do their will.” It is also being portrayed in some of the greatest Greek novels such as The Odyssey. Most of the Greeks believed that magicians were in the favor of the gods. In contrast to the paragraph above, some of authors disregarded magic as a mere phenomenon created by the mind of people and the magicians using illusions and tricks. One of the Greek Elders, Pliny, regarded magic as an importation from the East thus regarding it as “a mere nothingness”. This may have support for their belief in magic and magicians all came from Babylon, Egypt, and Assyrians, all from the East. During the middle ages, magicians were considered witches for they were branded as people who used witchcraft, sorcery, and as part of the cult; all are against the teachings of the Catholic Church during that time. But later, the magician named Reginald Scot explained how some of the magicians did their tricks using the natural phenomena. In the modern world, magic is already know as illusion for the human mind has evolved from superstitious beliefs into factual, scientific explanations and with the evolution of science, everything can be explained. This may have paved the way into one of the magician’s taboos: A magician never reveals his secret. In addition, some are still being considered as pawns of the devil or still being branded as witches when they know magic.
