Exhaust systems in cars are fitted to break up sound pulses from the engine, muffle them and allow waste gases to escape effectively. Some young motorists fit large-diameter pipes which are detrimental to the performance and lifetime of the car's engine. Here is an insight alternative modification that could also increase performance. Large-diameter pipes interfere with the blow phase of combustion. This has an effect of decreasing the pressure in the pipe and hence increasing the power output. However, the velocity of the waste gases also has to be taken into account. Such pipes retard the flow while smaller ones intensify it. It's important to balance the intake, exhaust and engine capacity in order to have an optimal flow rate without causing a delay of waste gases (backpressure). An ideal setup should have a different bore size corresponding to each RPM band. However, this is simply not practical. An optimum all-round setting is thus chosen. An aftermarket performance-oriented pipe should move the optimum point to a higher RPM. Some tuners offer a dual bore size pipe that varies proportionally with RPM. This allows low-down torque and a better peak power figure. The flow rate is then controlled via a mechanical/butterfly valve. The most significant bottleneck in the pipe is the silencer. Traditional types filter the waste gases round multiple S-shapes and baffles to kill the noise. A sport silencer comes in the form of a straight, perforated pipe. The holes interfere with the motion of sound waves to reduce the noise. Another way of accelerating expulsion of gases in exhaust systems is to polish the interior so that there's less friction. This is why steel headers have better flow as compared to their cast iron counterparts. These are just but a few alternatives to fitting large pipes in order to enhance performance.
