Rabindranath Tagore, Amartya Sen, Jagdish Chandra Bose, Megh Nad Saha all have a couple of things common in them. They are geniuses of their fields and belonged to the land of Bengal. Two of these are Nobel laureates, namely Rabindranath Tagore (for literature) and Amartya Sen(for economics). West Bengal boasts of the first IIT, (Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur), as well as the first IIM (Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata) of the country. It also has other reputed colleges like Presidency College, NIT Durgapur, ISBM Kolkata, Indian Statistical Institute among others. History & Achievements Pre-independence era: West Bengal has a glorious history of producing literary gems and geniuses, who have made a name for themselves as well as for the country on the global stage. The region has also proved instrumental in shaping up the modern educational system of the country as a whole. The western education model that exists till date was first adopted in Kolkata. West Bengal has had the largest share of reformist and modern education evangelist who started many educational institutions and societies. This is the very reason that Bengal has some of the oldest institutions of the country. The Hindu College, which was later renamed to Presidency College, was established in 1800. Further, the Calcutta Medical College, which is the oldest medical school in Asia is also more than 150 years old and was established in 1835. University of Calcutta, established in 1857, the year when the first war of independence was fought, has been modelled after the University of London. It is reputed as one of the biggest multidisciplinary universities of India. Technical education also saw its birth in the city of Kolkata in the form of Bengal Engineering College, which is now Bengal Engineering & Science University, the second oldest engineering institution of the country. Post-independence era: Even after India got its independence, West Bengal & Calcutta in particular continued to maintain its position as the forerunner of educational reforms. The first management institute, Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management was established in 1953. Later on the premiere technology institute of the country, IIT was established in Kharagpur. West Bengal also received the honours of being the home to the first IIM in its capital city Kolkata, which was set up in 1961. Modern educational hubs in Bengal Other than Kolkata, the capital city of this western state, Durgapur, which houses the National Institute of Technology and off late Siliguri have emerged as the major educational hubs. Durgapur is the place you will find premiere arts and humanity college St. Xavier’s, which is ranked amongst the best in the whole country. Public-Private partnership Although majority of the top colleges of Bengal are run by State or central government, there are few private colleges also that have gained prominence due to the top class infrastructure and excellent quality education imparted there.
