Users previously had limited choices available if they had to choose between computing devices. Laptops and desktops were the only two things available in the name of computing machines. Time has changed and technology has also moved ahead to bring forward many other devices to make computing devices better, more portable, quick and advanced. Constant upgradation of laptops and desktops has created several categories like laptop, notebook, netbook etc, to sometimes create confusion in the mind of users about their features, benefits, usages and specifications. This article would let you know about the fundamental difference between the five most used devices named as Netbook, Notebook, Ultraboook, Laptop and Palmtop. These five devices are arranged according to their size from large to small. Laptop Notebook Ultrabook Netbook Palmtop The convenience of portability increases with the decreasing size of the devices as an ultrabook is more portable than a laptop because of its size and weight. Despite their varying sizes all perform well but the final choice lies with the user. If you require a device meant to handle complex tasks then probably a netbook or palmtop would not suffice. On the contrary, simple browsing and e-mailing tasks could be easily taken care of by a highly portable device like netbook or palmtop. Lets know about these devices in little detail: Notebooks and Laptops Among all the portable devices mentioned above, laptop is the largest and oldest one. It was first developed as a replacement of desktop computers, allowing the user to carry the computer. There is a slight difference of size between laptop and notebook, the latter being slightly smaller in size than the laptop. Because of this difference in size and design, vendors usually use both the terms interchangeably. The price range of laptops and notebooks can go as high as $4000. You would find notebooks with varying screen sizes between 12-18 inches. Notebooks are powerful as well and many of them are equipped with high end GPU or graphics card for letting users enjoy 3-D gaming but the same is not applicable for all notebooks. Technically, there lies a very thin line of difference between notebook and laptop as the former is also equipped with a DVD drive and high storage hard disk. In case the device doesn’t offer these two components they would be placed in the category of ultrabooks. Ultrabooks After notebook, technology has leaped further to make devices sleeker and thinner with the introduction of ultrabooks. Ultrabooks are typically known for their light-weight and design. In majority of the cases, ultrabooks are below 1.5 Kg of weight. The term ‘ultrabook’ was first coined by the industry after the launch of the Apple McBook Air, which is undoubtedly the first ultrabook. Despite the thin body (below 2cm), the screen size of an ultrabook goes hand in hand with notebooks, its size ranging between 11-15 inches. Ultrabooks are remarkably lighter, less noisy and way faster than regular laptops because they are equipped with SSD hard drives that contribute to better speed and performance. Ultrabooks are not fitted with a DVD drive so if you want to play your DVD then you must have an alternative device to do so. Netbooks Netbook is another highly portable and lighter computing device ranging between the screen size of 9-10 inches. Netbooks were extremely popular because of their smaller size before iPad was launched but after the iPad came into the market, demand and popularity of netbook started shrinking. It is considered as a complete computing platform. Palmtops Palmtops are the smallest computing devices available in the market today. As the name suggests, it can fit on your palm comfortably and perform many of your computing requirements. They run on the low-powered Windows version popularly known as Windows CE. Palmtops usually come with smaller screen size ranging between 6-7 inches. Hi! I am Brook M.
