It is situated between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea as a point of convergence between East and West, North and South. Turkey and Greece are in close proximity. Ancient Greeks launched a thousand ships to save the beautiful Helen and later built the Trojan Horse to infiltrate troops into the city of Troy thought to have existed in these parts. These stories are fundamental to the history of the Western World. A visit to the city to see some of the marvelous historical sites can bring antiquity and modernity into focus. Turkey is now a modern state with deep roots in history. As an associate of the European Economic community it has a democratic, secular government and follows First World policies. Tourism and night life are most lively in the south west regions of the country, around Marmaris.
