Phishing has become one of the most widespread and dangerous kinds of scam. Phishing is a scam in which criminal sends an email that looks like a valid financial or ecommerce document. Email contains a link that leads to a fraud website. As soon as users get to a website, all their credentials are sent to the frauds. Phishing allows stealing personal and financial information. Unfortunately, curiosity is a sin that has made many people victims of phishers. To recognize phishing scam you should be very attentive when reading an email. Here are some signs of a phishing email: #1. Serious mechanical errors (punctuation and spelling mistakes). #2. Formatting mistakes (no spaces between words or paragraphs, duplicated spaces). #3. Hidden sources and addresses. #4. Requests to send personal or financial information (ID, credit card or bank account number). The main danger of phishing is that it allows identity thefts. And as everyone knows identity theft is the easiest way If you have become a victim of a phishing scam, you should immediately contact financial institution you deal with and report scam. Here are some tips that will help you to effectively report scam: 1. File a report with the Federal Trade Commission. You may file your report using this email: spam@uce.gov. 2. Contact your financial institution and report becoming a victim of phishing scam. You may ask bank to freeze your credit card. Also, ask your bank if there were any suspicious transactions on your account. By the way, in order to prevent your account from unauthorized transactions, I’d recommend you installing identity theft alert. 3. In case you have followed the link given in fraud email and filled out forms that required your personal information, immediately change this data. Check out your account to find out whether there were any fraudulent activities on your account. Today, Internet is one of the most dangerous places on Earth. Millions of people get scammed by online frauds. Criminals invent more and more sophisticated ways to scam consumers, so it’s very difficult to avoid getting scammed. Following safety rules can help to avoid falling a victim of a phishing scam: - never open suspicious emails sent from strangers. - don’t follow links given in strange emails (no matter what is written in the email!). In case you doubt, you may contact sender via phone (if letter is legit, all the contact information will be provided). - don’t provide your personal or financial information on websites that you are not sure about! Remember that such naivety can cost you a lot. - install high quality and reliable malware program that protects from phishing and other dangers. Also, adjust spam filter on your email. - be selective when it’s about browsing on the web. Suspicious and strange websites mustn’t attract you.
