Moving to a new home means coordinating a thousand details and making sure that each and every aspect is taken care of. Yes, you can always hire professional movers to assist you with packing, loading, transportation, and unloading, but after that you are on your own. You need to adjust to a new place, new surroundings, and a new lifestyle. Before moving to a new city, you need to conduct some research about its safety and crime rate. After all, there is no point in moving someplace that is regularly in the news for its high crime rate, right? Once you make sure that the city is safe for your family, you can move there. Even so, burglaries and thefts are quite common and you need to take suitable measures so that your home is protected from these: - If you haven't done so already, change the locks right after you move in. Real estate agents or previous occupants might have old keys with them, so it is better to take care of the issue at the beginning.
- A section of the house, such as the patio or balcony might be fitted with a sliding door. Secure them with pull-down bars and wooden dowel at the bottom.
- Due to an increase in the number of robberies, it is time to think about installing an alarm system at home. Most of the times, people think that they don’t require alarms and repent when they discover their house has been robbed in their absence. Secure windows with wireless alarms equipped with magnetic trips or a simple alarm system around the house. They are reasonably priced too.
- Don't forget to draw the blinds when you are out of the house.
- Intruders are often discouraged if they see that a house has its lights on. Install a timer to keep the lights on when you leave.
- Don't leave the doors unlocked even if you are stepping out for a couple of minutes.
- Electronic items like laptops, which are portable, should not be left lying around during your absence.
- Take time to get to know your neighbors before inviting them over. It is not implied that someone from the neighborhood might be a thief, but it is better not to let strangers in your home right after the move. If someone you don’t know knocks to your door, talk to him from the window or open the door with the chain in place.
- Don't forget to find out the address of the nearest police station.
