While you’re busy buying backpacks and clothes to prepare your child for back to school, think about stocking that fridge too. Nutrition studies have shown that kids who eat better in the morning perform better at school. It’s simple; kids need notebooks to write and food to learn. Breakfast fills the body and the mind. Kids need nourishment in the morning so they can take on the day ahead. Breakfast not only helps to fill their physical needs but also their mental faculties too. Children need food to physically endure the eight hour school day but also to mentally process what they are learning. What they are eating matters too. Sugar and fat filled foods work to slow down a child’s mental and physical health. Foods that are high in protein stay in their systems longer and work to power up their bodies for the tough day ahead. Replace those high sugar cereals and premade breakfast sandwiches with fresh eggs, high fibre breads and fruit. Several school boards across Canada are implementing healthy food programs. High schools in British Columbia have replaced the traditional chips and chocolate bars in vending machines with smart food alternatives. Elementary schools in southern Ontario are stocking their cupboards with healthy snacks. Programs like these go a long way to fight other larger issues including hunger. Hunger strikes closer to home than most people think. Mississauga for example, has a staggering poverty rate of 17 percent, 61 percent of whom are children. These residents struggle to pay their rent, let alone worry about the types of food their children are eating. Local organizations, such as The Mississauga Food Bank, are helping those in need sadly struggle to meet the demand for food. Many children go to school hungry each and every day. When preparing for back to school this August don’t just fill up those backpacks, stock up those fridges too. Come up with healthy meal plans and get your kids involved. Also, consider making a donation to a local food bank to help fill the belly of your child’s classmate who went to school hungry that morning.
