When installing a large garden fountain, you will need to find a good flat place, accessible for easy maintenance and in a spot with a mix of sun and shade. It is important to find the right spot in your yard for a large garden fountain. Too often, a fountain is placed for visibility from the street or for enhancing the look of the house and not for the enjoyment of its inhabitants. Such fountains often wind up poorly maintained and run-down. Instructions as follows: Firstly, choose a flat area large enough for the fountain catchment pool with room to place a large stone feature for the water fountain and room behind the feature to house and maintain the pump. Pick a place that gets a few hours of sunlight a day. Too much sun can give you problems with bacteria growth, fading of the finished surfaces, sun damage to exposed plastic parts and rapid evaporation from the catchment pond, all of which increase your maintenance load. Secondly, dig a hole large enough for your pond liner. Dig the hole with sides as straight as possible. Drive stakes around the edges and nail 2 by 6 framing boards on edge around the hole to support the sides of the liner. Set the lowest spot of the catchment pool opposite where you plan to put the waterfall or fountain feature, so that water will circulate the length of the pond and keep the entire pond fresh. Thirdly, glue together the drain and PVC pipe assembly. Dig a trench from where the drain is located to the spot where the pump will be. Use the level to ensure that the pipe is level or runs slightly downhill. Add a 90-degree elbow at the end pointing straight up with enough pipe to clear 6 inches above the ground, then fill in the trench with dirt, leaving the drain assembly sticking up high enough so the flange will be above the plastic pond liner. Do not install the flange yet. Fourthly, attach the tubing to your pump and test the water flow to make sure everything is working properly before installing the fountain or water feature. Fifth, place the stone water feature or fountain spray alongside the pond or in it. If you place a center spray, simply run the tubing into the pond, gook it to the spray assembly in the center of the pond and set it in the pond. For a waterfall, attach the tubing to the back of the feature and hook it up to any water flow control or attachment that the water feature uses. Test the pump and water feature to make sure everything works properly. Add river rocks and larger stones to the pond to make the fountain more interesting.
