Since their creation, cupcakes have become pervasive fashion accessories, present even in our jewellery boxes. With their colourful appearance, be it flashy or provocative, cupcakes are the new, shining stars of the pastry world. Discovered in the popular U.S. TV series "Sex and The City", cupcakes have become a fashion item by themselves. Considered as the most hyped cake so far, they are as much appreciated by fashionistas as they are by gourmets and food lovers. In England, they are known as "Fairy Cake" because of their original glaze and reduced dimensions. The term "cupcake" was born from the coffee cup originally used in its preparation. Cupcakemania has invaded New York, the fashion city. Blogs, cookbooks, and newspapers known for their influence and seriousness dedicate entire pages to the humble cake. One of the most famous pastry shops in the city, Magnolia Bakery, presents them as guest-stars in its shop windows. Since the cupcakes appeared in "Sex and The City", the store sells nearly 3,000 pieces daily. Customers are even willing to stand in line for hours to buy them. Cupcakes are, however, ordinary cakes, somewhere in between a genoise and a muffin. It is their glaze that makes them so original and wildly popular. They can be stuffed with cocoa fillings, nut fillings, or compound chocolate for industry use. Certain pastry chefs compete to present the cake in an even fancier and more original fashion. Indeed, cupcakes are now being offered as bags, jewellery, and fashion accessories.
