When I purchased an old house in the historic district of the small town I'd fallen in love with years ago, I knew the work was going to be intense. I had always been something of a do-it-yourself gal, so despite the challenges, I was not intimidated. In fact, I felt particularly ready to tackle just about anything because my mother had given me the money for Fein Multimaster blades that I would need to accomplish some of the more precise work. I had owned the tool for several years, but the addition of more blades meant that I could handle more of the projects myself instead of spending money to have a contractor do the work. The first project I decided to deal with was getting the bathroom cleaned up and comfortable. When the facilities are operational and you can take a shower or brush your teeth, everything else seems to fall in place. The first thing that needed to happen was to pull out the old flooring. Dipping into my collection of Fein Multimaster blades, I selected the standard saw blade to cut through the ancient, brittle baseboards that had probably been in place for many decades. When the old linoleum was out and new floor had been laid, the precision saw blade was ideal to replace the baseboards with nice wood that had clean cuts. The tile work around the tub and on the counter top was in bad shape. The old tiles were in better shape than I had expected, but a lot of the grout was missing or discolored. I wanted to preserve as much of the old materials as possible, so decided to turn to the Fein Multimaster blades that are designed for tile and plumbing work. With the diamond segment saw blade I cut out the old grout in the areas where it needed to be replaced. The cuts were clean and I was able to re-grout with ease. The result was a smooth, beautiful finish that brought out the character of the room in a way that couldn't have been accomplished by putting in a more modern tile design. The second area I renovated was the utility room. Friends questioned why I would prioritize that space when others seemed more important. The real answer was that I wanted to wash all the clothes that I dirtied every day mucking around in the garden and the house. The room had an outside door which gave me quick access to the yard. Pulling out the Fein Multimaster blades, I was able to transform several lengths of fine lumber into a set of deep shelves near the door. When the shelves were painted a bright color, they made the perfect place to set my pruners, trowels and flower pots. This delightful bit of built-in storage made the area feel like home. I built another shelf next to the washer and dryer. This one held the laundry detergent, spray-on stain remover and fabric softener sheets. One of my favorite projects was restoring the stairs that led up to the bedrooms. At some point a resident of the house had decided to glue awful red carpet to the stair treads. I thought I would never get the old textile pulled off, but when I added the rigid scraper blade to my collection of Fein Multimaster blades I knew the problem was solved. Using the scraper, I was able to remove the old carpet and hardened adhesive all in one evening. The work revealed hardwood planks that I was sure would look remarkable if properly finished. Using the Fein buffer accessory, I was able to give them a smooth finish that allowed the wood grain to show in all its glory.
