Pack with Discretion, Brace Yourself for the Long Flight

Travel & Tourism
Long-haul flights are tedious to say the least, and you can compare the experience to an uncomfortable sleepover at a friend’s house. Flight attendants can only do so much to keep you accommodated, and for most people, a carry-on bag reminds them of the creature comforts they’ve left back home. Some underestimate the importance of a luggage tag, the same reason why they spend hours searching for their belongings among the conveyor parade at the airport. If you went so far as to invest in new luggage for your next trip, then you should also pair these with accessories essential for identification and security.

Your luggage contents determine the conveniences of your flight (and the comforts of your trip). Remember that Mr. Bean episode where he tried to squeeze all of his effects in luggage the size of a footlocker? Save yourself the hassles and invest in luggage of several sizes. Few people get by with the bare necessities, and it’s nice to know there’s extra space for guilty pleasures, like a hairdryer or an extra pair of shoes. Check-in luggage is necessary for week-long trips, but make sure yours clears airline specifications for cabin compartments. Airlines are strict on dimension and weight limits, and a daypack or shoulder bag should be portable enough to fit right in. If you don’t want to part with possessions a few hours before your flight, check your luggage’s weight with a portable scale before you head for the airport.

Your carry-on should keep you company for the duration of your flight. Airport security lets you bring in a carry-on and an extra personal effect, so make sure your laptop comes with its own sling bag as well. Stash all your travel toiletries into a common pouch (Ziploc bag); liquids and creams should be placed in 100ml containers or plastic bottles. Airport authorities will sort through your toiletries, and it is best if everything is easily accessible upon inspection. Some airports require you to purchase the pouch otherwise, and the money you’ll spend on it is a rip-off anyway you look at it.

Your toiletry kit doesn’t even have to include samples of your cream collections back at home; you can even do away with the shampoo, conditioner, and toothpaste because these are supplied and regularly replenished at your hotel. If you’re using prescription products, make sure you have enough in your check-in to tide you throughout your trip. Your carry-on should have enough room for knickknacks if you’re travelling with children, though. Snacks and small toys are invaluable distractions for children weary of long flights. You can also tuck in spare socks and underwear into your carry-on, just in case you need them.

The first rule of travel is to minimize your baggage, but the assortment of items you’ll bring is still up to your discretion. You can pack items beyond the essentials, so long as you stay within your baggage limits. Place a luggage tag on each of your bags so you’ll easily spot these out among the pile. You’ll have more time to spare for connecting flights if you’re not worried about misplaced and damaged luggage.
