I have always been a big proponent for one to be able to defend themselves; no surprise there. Now recently there has been a very controversial program started up in the Tuscaloosa City School System. They are decided to instruct the teachers and students of their school system to fight back against a shoot that is on the campus. Wow! That is a real departure from the current thinking of run and hide. I applaud the thought! I also saw a poll that was taken which asked if they should teach the fight back program or continue with the run and hid program. Well, 67% said yes, 23% no, and 8% undecided. Very interesting stats, so what are they going to teach? They are going to teach how to run but if you have to fight for your life, do so! They are teaching to throw things at the shooter. Nice idea if you have enough people doing so but a poor idea if there is only a couple of people. What next? The police are going to teach some form of self defense. Now at first glance that might seem a good idea but police are not really taught self defense. They are taught how to subdue someone. That is very different then self defense. Don’t get me wrong I think anything is better then nothing but we should stop and look at a few facts. There are only two things that you have to know about self defense. First, don’t stay in the same place the attack started at. If punched at, move. If kicked at, move away. Just to stand there but move. There are a host of techniques that you can be taught at this level and every martial artist will have their take on it. You can even just sit down quickly and force the attacker to deal with the height difference. A shoot might do nothing more the just aim low but it’s interesting that it can mess up a shooter to shoot at a down angle. A more speeding change of height might be more appropriate at this moment, however. Second, interrupt the shooters program. Now throwing things does do this as they are not thinking of their own safety and have to break off the attack to duck or move such that they don’t get hit by a book or something like that. It may sound stupid but even simple attacks to the attacker can interrupt their program. The next thing about survival is to keep doing these two steps. Now, that said I would hope that the self defense training might include a simple weapons disarm, striking to the eyes, kicking sensitive spots, punching so they don’t hurt themselves but can actually hit something with enough force to do damage. Imagine 10 angry kids kicking, biting, punching, throwing things, and causing such a mess that a shooter drops their gun and runs. Maybe it’s not too far out there to be of use. I don’t know about you but I would rather die trying to save myself then to be executed just sitting there. I don’t do victim very well and I like the way this is heading. Something to be said putting the power of ones self defense squarely back into our hands and not necessarily count on law enforcement. I have been in this camp for some time (especially since I developed the self defense weapon) and I hope other schools do the same. It will give our citizens a sense of empowerment at a time of need. Kind of like Tod Beamer on that airplane that went down in PA on Sept 11th. A small band of people pulling together what ever they can muster to get the job done. This might be the best self defense concept for some time. Bravo Tuscaloosa. Master Peter Brusso PDWS.biz
