A candlelit vigil is being held at Boston University for the threeAmerican students killed in a crash south of Taupo. Boston University students Daniela Rosanna Lekhno, 20, RochJauberty, 21, and Austin Brashears, 21, died at the scenewhen the van they were travelling in rolled at around 7.30amyesterday on Lake Rotoaira Rd, near Rangipo, 10km south of Turangi. The candlelight vigil for the students began about noon NZtime. The people mover van, travelling in convoy with another van, wascarrying up to eight students from the university when it rolled,throwing several people from the car. Margaret Theriault, 21, remains in a critical condition in theintensive care unit at Waikato Hospital after undergoing surgeryovernight, Waikato Hospital communications manager Mary Anne Gillsaid. Emily Melton, 21, and Stephen Houseman were treated at Taupohospital for minor injuries and have since been released. Kathryn Moldawer, 21, and Alys McAlpine (who was in the second van)are both in a stable condition at Rotorua Hospital with moderateinjuries. All of the students except Theriault were enrolled in theuniversity's study abroad program in Auckland. Theriault wasenrolled in a study abroad program in Sydney, Australia, BostonUniversity Today reported. Boston University President Robert Brown said it was "a horribletragedy". "Our prayers go out the students and their families. We will do allwe can to provide comfort and assistance to those who have beeninjured, and to the families and friends of the victims. "The university is mobilising all of our resources to help ourstudents and families deal with this tragedy." Road policing manager inspector Kevin Taylor told ONE News lastnight that the "second of the vehicles had drifted to the leftgoing around a bend, wheels touched gravel, driver over-correctedand it's rolled and thrown students out". "Why the vehicle drifted to the left is still to be established." Students get support Police yesterday took the traumatised students in thevehicle following the van to Turangi, where they willbe interviewed today. The group were on their way to walk the Tongariro Crossing.
