If you are a local business trying to expand, you might want to consider going online to broaden your customer base. Doing this doesn’t mean that you do not engage your local customers though; it is still important to get them involved and bring them into your online marketing scheme. Doing this is not as difficult as it may seem. There are lots of local online advertising opportunities if you know where to look. Especially, you want to focus on the free options that are available to you through business listings, local search engines, social networking sites, blogging sites, and mobile technology.

So how do you engage your local customers? By personalizing your online business so it suits their needs. This in and of itself is fairly simple, you want to humanize it, make them feel comfortable. Several studies agree that customers seek one important thing from businesses: transparency. For starters they want to know what the purpose of the business is, what you do, where your business is headed. You have to be very open about what your purpose is online and what you are trying to accomplish if you want to win over the local customer base. Speak to the local community and interact with people on the social sites to get a feel for how your business is perceived and what customers want. Customers like having a voice so the social aspect and online reviews are very important.

When you are trying to get started with local online advertising it helps to analyze local consumer data, and get outside involvement from your customer base. When engaging customers online, your primary focus should with personal-level communication. This means getting involvement from your customer base but not trying to get too many people talking at once or making messages too mass in appeal. Feedback will come when people do not feel that their voice is overshadowed by a million or even a thousand other voices, so focus on the smaller crowds and respond to individual feedback. Finally it is important to properly train your team, whether it is your IT people or sales, they should know what you want and what you expect from them and how to properly respond to customers (policies, tone, message). Training is probably one of the most important aspects of any successful business. It will be what separates you from every other company on the market, and especially from every other website out there that might try to get attention from your base.
