What is diamond concrete grinding? Well, concrete is a hard building material that is made by blending water, cement, and aggregate, like sand or gravel. So, concrete floors, patios, driveways, etc. are very durable and strong. However, they can also have imperfections which make the uneven tripping hazards. When concrete is poured, it is usually down in sections. Where two sections meet, the concrete may be at two different levels. This is called faulting. To level out and smooth the concrete, you have to use a material that is hard enough to shave the top layer of the concrete off. Diamond concrete grinding plates are very effective at evening out the surface of the concrete. The diamond concrete grinding plates are attached to a machine that operates like a floor buffer. There are also grinding machines that are hand-held versions, more appropriate for concrete countertops and small concrete spaces. Some grinding plates are intended to be used dry, while others are meant for wet use. Grinding concrete with water flowing through the machine and on the concrete cools the surface and helps control dust blowing up. Many dry machines hook up to a vacuum (or has one built in) that sucks up the dust during operation. This improves air quality and helps reduce the need for clean up. With a rotating motion, diamond concrete grinding machines level off the uneven parts of the concrete. The operator sets them at a set depth so the surface is level upon the completion of the grinding process. The more weight a machine has, the more grinding pressure will be exerted. For this reason, some grinding machine manufacturers sell weights that can be attached to the machine to increase the force applied. Many concrete grinding machines also double as polishing machines, with changeable plates. After the concrete is leveled out, polishing the concrete will make it smoother and shinier prior to applying densifier or sealant. Some machines have plates which are simple and quick to change while others may have an involved process to switch out diamond concrete grinding plates and polishing plates. If water is being used to cool the concrete during grinding, plates which have grooves designed to allow the water to flow away can be useful. The grinding process can really improve the surface of the concrete, allowing it to receive the densifier, which will strengthen and harden the concrete even more. After the polishing and densifier, the concrete surface will typically be shiny and smooth, without tripping hazards.
