What is a Wine cellar? Wine cellar is a storage room which is used to keep wine bottles and barrels. The wine cellars are very helpful in protecting the wines from the high and low temperature and the light. A good type of wine cellar can store the wine properly in a low temperature and it can also protect against the extreme change in the humidity. The wine cellar can protect the wine for a very long duration but the cellar has to be below the ground. The cellar which is above the ground is termed as wine room or wine closets. There are two types of wine cellars and these are as follows: • Passive wine cellars: The passive wine cellars are found in natural cool and humid places and it do not change drastically according to the season. In this type of cellars a deep natural caves are used to store the wines. • Active wine cellars: The active wine cellars utilize a monitoring and cooling equipments, insulation (padding), seals and non-natural humidifiers. This type of wine cellars is very costly according to their sizes and they have a very dynamic structure. The active wine cellars can be a perfect form of protection for the precious wines. Custom wine cellar wine design: There are various types of wine cellar design and these are mentioned below: • Thiemann custom wine cellar: This custom designed wine cellar was introduced in the wine spectator in 2010 in the issue of “Bigger is better”. • Yacht wine cellar: The yacht wine cellar is a custom wine cellar which is build up on the 124 foot motor yacht. The temperature is well maintained in this custom designed wine cellar. • Hand built Mahogany humidor: wine cellar design is a custom hand build with a Spanish cedar. Hand built mahogany humidor has a curved corners for storing the wines. • Lots of wine in small place: In this custom designed cellar, you keep as much wine you wish to keep and it properly stored in a small area. This type of wine cellar can store upto 3000 bottles of wine and consists of a rolling ladder which is made in incased glass. • Elegant and antique: The elegant and antique wine cellar has curved bridges. They consist of antique wine compress place and they have decorated displayed area. Main factors of Wine cellars: • Conditions: The perfect condition to store the wine must be 55 to 58 degree Fahrenheit and 55 to 75% of humidity. Don’t keep the wine if the temperature condition is above 85 degree because it can ruin the wine. Remember if the heat temperature of the cellar increases then it cause oxidation which can harm the wines. The dry condition of the cellar can lead to cork to contract of the wines. • Considerations: The wine cellar requires an outside grade door to maintain the humidity and the temperature of the inside area of the cellar. Arrange a proper lighting system for the wines in the cellar.
