LYNCHBURG -- UPDATE: The ambulance that collided with a pickup truck in the intersectionof Campbell and Florida avenues did not have its emergency lightsand siren on, police said. Justin Kidd, 25, of Rustburg, has been charged with recklessdriving in the crash that killed former Lynchburg firefighter DeanAnders, 69, Lynchburg Police said. Kidd, officers said, ran the red light at that intersection momentsbefore the ambulance collided with Anders" truck. Kidd is a paid first responder for Campbell County"semergency services. County officials would not comment on hisemployment status Friday.

Those who knew and worked with Anders called him a friend andmentor. Master Firefighter Jack Williams, of the Lynchburg Fire Department, said he worked directly under Anders for three of his years at thedepartment. Anders served as a Lynchburg Fire Department commander beforeretiring in 1991. "He had a passion for the job, and he also had a lot of loveand passion for the men that worked with him," Williams said.

Anders often reached out to younger firefighters at the department,he said, showing them the ropes. "Dean Anders was a mentor to me," Williams said. "He kind of took us guys under his wings and educated us onour job as a firefighter, and just taught us what it was like to bea man." Anders was a family man who constantly talked about his wife anddaughter, Williams said. He always was "a man ofintegrity." Williams, 46, recalled one time early in career as a firefighterwhen he responded to a call involving an injured child.

"I was pretty upset and emotional about it. When I came backto the station he kind of held a little counseling session with meand talked me through it, and just gave me a lot of comfort." He said it"s hard to believe the man whose life was dedicatedto saving people died in a collision with an ambulance. "I feel bad for the gentleman that was driving theambulance," he said, calling the situation "just a veryunfortunate accident." Williams said he can somewhat identify with Kidd because Williamsused to drive an ambulance during his career with the city. "There have been lots of close calls," he said, but hewas never in a wreck involving an emergency vehicle. "We"re praying for their family, praying for his wifeand his daughter, and we"re also praying for the gentlemanthat was driving the ambulance." State law allows, under certain provisions, emergency vehicles topass through stoplights and stop signs, but only if lights andsirens are enabled, and "if the speed of the vehicle issufficiently reduced to enable it to pass a signal, traffic light,or device with due regard to the safety of persons andproperty." Police said there is no indication Kidd was exceeding the postedspeed limit.

12:15 p.m. update: Police have charged the driver of the ambulance involved in a fatalwreck in Lynchburg on Thursday with reckless driving. A Lynchburg Police Department news release issued just after noonon Friday said that the driver - Justin Kidd, 25, of Rustburg -failed to stop at the red light at the intersection of Campbell andFlorida avenues. No additional information was immediately available. Earlier: A Lynchburg man died after his pickup truck and a Campbell Countyambulance collided in Lynchburg on Thursday afternoon in the fifthfatal crash in the area in less than two weeks.

Lynchburg Police said Dean Anders, 69, was pronounced dead at thescene of the crash at the intersection of Campbell and Floridaavenues. The ambulance, driven by Justin Kidd, 25, of Rustburg, was headednorth on Campbell Avenue. Anders was driving his truck across Campbell Avenue from MartinStreet onto Florida Avenue, police said. The ambulance collided with the Ford pickup in itspassenger"s side. The truck overturned.

A witness at the scene said she was on Campbell Avenue heading intothe city, when the ambulance passed her. Roseann Dickerson, of Lynchburg, said she saw the ambulance slowapproaching the light, but continued through the intersection whereit hit the pickup. At one point, the ambulance was sittingpartially on top of the truck, she said. Capt.

Ryan Zuidema, of the Lynchburg Police Department, said theambulance was transporting a patient to Lynchburg General Hospital. That patient, a family member, Kidd and another Campbell Countyemergency worker staffing the ambulance were taken to LynchburgGeneral Hospital. None are believed to have life-threateninginjuries. Lynchburg Fire Department Chief Brad Ferguson said the county unitcalled for help immediately after the wreck, at 12:15 p.m. He said the first unit arrived on scene six minutes later.

Police and fire and rescue crews created a barrier of sheets aroundthe truck before removing Anders"s body from the truck thatcame to a stop upside down in the median. His body was removed morethan hour after the crash. Zuidema said the James River Regional Crash Reconstruction Team isinvestigating the wreck. He said charges are pending, but could not confirm Thursdayafternoon whether the ambulance had its lights and sirens on, orwhether the traffic light was red at the time. Police reopened the south-bound lanes of Campbell Avenue at 2:45p.m., and reopened the north-bound lanes at 4 p.m.

Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call theLynchburg Police Department"s traffic unit at (434) 455-6047or Central Virginia Crime Stoppers at (888) 798-5900. Campbell County did not release a statement regarding the wreckThursday.
