Jailbreaking your iphone basically means unlocking your iphone from Apple so you are not limited to only being able to use applications and resources from Apple. The legality of jailbreaking is a grey area. Various cross platform tools are available without any propriety code meaning it should not infringe copyright, except Apple of course disagrees, saying the code modifies Apple's operating system. Often people want to jailbreak their iphone so they can use the phone on other networks, offering better coverage or to enable you to use your phone overseas. This type of jailbreaking is even more border line in legality because it makes changes to the modem ware in the phone. Jailbreaking to use third party applications has definite advantages. Cydia and now a smaller store called Icy are unofficial online shops for buying apps rejected by Apple, usually because they allow you to do things Apple would rather you didn't and modify older iphones to have the same capabilities as newer models. Apple, of course, would rather you went out and spent a few hundred dollars on a new phone. But there are of course disadvantages, except for just annoying Apple and no tech support for these apps or your phone if you switch networks, some jailbreak phones have been susceptible to certain worms and viruses, including a rather strange one in Australia that caused the iphones to display images of 80's poster Rick Astley! The main disadvantage is that jailbreaking voids your warranty so if you have any issues with your iphone, you will not get any support from Apple and if you use itunes to restore a clean version of the iPhone software, there is no way to tell you had previously jailbroken your phone. Jailbreaking may also make your iphone less stable and more prone to crashing. And if you regularly update the software on your iphone then this will negate the jailbreak. It is a simple process of downloading a small piece of software onto your computer, then transferring it to your iphone and this breaks open your iphone operating system. A great little tool available for those that have jailbroken their iPhones is a app called SnapTap, available for just $0.99, and which turns your volume buttons into camera buttons, so even people who have never used an iphone can work your camera and take a photo for you.
